tama kayo pareho. you have to keep in mind that the US government does what's in the best interest of the US. if they deemed it wasn't in the best interest of the US to have a permanent military presence in the Philippines, what does that say about owning it outright? |

| Strategically, the US needs the Philippines(although they have Saipan but it's too small) to solidify their position in Asia Pacific with the imminent rise of China as the next superpower nation, and yeah, North Korea's threat. (the US wanted a permanent military presence in the Philippines but also, they wanted to maintain the previous arrangement which is paying us their stay through humanitarian aid, so we threw them out because we wanted them to pay taxes so they would be obligated) That's not counting our vast natural resources in Mindanao, (the US predicted their country to have a food shortage by 2050's) and of course the Deuterium deposit in Philippine deep , the hard water(H3O) which could be a potential source of fuel, an alternative to gasoline. But personally, I don't want us to be one of the US states simply because our forefathers sacrificed their bloods and lives just to gain our independence and we should appreciate their efforts by retaining it, thus, we also need to sacrifice ourselves, work harder, to improve our present economic and political situation, not by looking for the shortest and easiest route.......... that's selfishness. And besides, I'm still very proud to be called as a Filipino, not an American or any other nationality. |

| I'm bias.. I have to say no. losing self identity and pride is something I can't live without. PLUS, I don't like USA. |

you used two (2) significant words - wants and needs; but you seem to be confusing the two. by moving out of the us bases in the philippines in 1991, the u.s. showed it does NOT need a permanent presence in the philippines to solidify its position in asia pacific. |
