Sample of exotic animals...

Sugar Glider

Petaurus breviceps. Belongs to a group of animals called phalangers which means "fingery one"

Type of animal A mammal, specifically a marsupial (carries its young in a pouch)

Special characteristics has soft grey fur with a black stripe down its back. Overall length is 10 to 12 inches with the tail accounting for half the overall length. The last couple of inches of the tail are also black. The eyes are dark and large. The ears are large, erect and hairless. They have five fingers on the front hands and four toes and a large, flattened, opposable big toe on the hind feet. Two of the toes are fused together (syndactylous) to form a grooming comb. Females have a pouch in roughly the area one would expect to find a navel on a placental mammal. Mature males have a bald spot in the middle of their forehead and another on their chest. These are scent glands. Sugar gliders have a gliding membrane called a patagium that allows them to glide from one tree to another.

Sugar Glider as Pocket Pets

It is hardly surprising to those of us familiar with the charming sugar glider that they are becoming popular as household pets in North America. Indeed, they have many of the characteristics of the perfect pet in that they are clean, personable, attractive and relatively quiet. Their housing and dietary requirements are easy to cater to. They are hardy and don't have a lot of health problems. They breed very readily in captivity and they live up to fifteen years. tambayan/thmbup.gif

Another exotic animals...

Wallabies

Wallabies are marsupials. They belong to a group of animals called macropods (Latin for "big foot"), which includes all the kangaroos and wallabies (50 some odd species in all). While the species vary in size and the kind of terrain they prefer, overall they are all very similar in their dietary requirements and reproductive behavior.

The Bennett wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) is one of the larger varieties of wallaby, reaching an adult height of about 30 inches and weighing between 30 to 50 lbs. A wallaby is simply a small kangaroo and, like a kangaroo, it carries its young, called joeys, in a pouch on its abdomen.

Choosing a Pet Wallaby

When buying a wallaby you should decide who to buy from and what to buy. There are lots of breeders out there but not all of them are knowledgeable and some are unwilling or unable to supply you with all the after-sale support you need. Do your homework and select an animal from a caring, knowledgeable and responsible individual. If she cares about her animals she will be pretty fussy about who she sells them to and will probably want to know quite a bit about you in order to confirm that you are willing to make a long term commitment to her baby (after all, it might live 10 to 15 years) and have the facilities to provide it with a suitable home. Apartment dwellers need not apply!

Do not buy a wallaby from someone who is unwilling to show you their breeding premises (or at least photographs). Never buy a wallaby from an auction, especially if it is a baby. Who knows how much stress it has endured on the way to market, how recently it has been fed? Who bred it? Who are you going to call for advice when you need it? And forget any guarentees. Most of the time there is no information regarding the seller or the care of the animal attached to the crate. While there are a lot of honest decent people who take their animals to auctions and take special care that they are well looked after, it is hard to sort the wheat from the chaf in an auction environment. The sale numbers come up and you bid and what you get is purely luck of the draw. A lot of the sellers don't want you to be able to track them down, they just want to take your money and run.
